Cheating catches up with the Astros

Updated: Feb 28, 2020

"It's wrong, you're messing with peoples careers." This from the mild spoken, go about your business and do it right RF from the Atlanta Braves Nick Markakis. The right fielder is soft spoken from Woodstock, Georgia, just 15 miles north of where the Braves call home. But he had some choice words Tuesday morning about the Houston Astros cheating scandal in 2017 at Braves Spring Training Camp in North Port, Florida. He went on to say he thinks that those players on that team need a beating. Listening to MLB Network and other sports affiliates, I think they are taking his words out of context. I don't literally think he wants to take them to the back alley and beat them, I think he is meaning retaliation on the field, which I think will happen at some point by the teams that were affected by this scandal.

Technology has come a long way in the world of sports, and now instant video in dugouts that players can look at, which is good when a pitcher wants to see his realtime mechanics to see what he might work on in the later inning. But when players stop watching the game, and pay more attention to video to get a better edge, sometimes it goes too far. When the Astros took to video to start stealing signs in the 2017 season, that went too far, especially when the Astros won the World Series that year. And it came out earlier today that the team would also beat on a trash can in the dugout to cheat and steal signs as well.

This did not effect my team, but it did effect the 2017 World Series NL team Los Angeles Dodgers. I feel for the Dodgers because what could have been for that series if the Astros played the game the way it was suppose to be played. The Astros were untouchable, and now we all know why.

I think that Commissioner Manfred should suspend players this season that were on the Astros for the 2017 team, either if those players are still on the Astros team, or currently playing on another team. Radio station in Atlanta, 92.9 The Game made a good point today, you don't have to suspend the entire team, first, the entire team this year wasn't there in 2017. So just suspend the players that were there 25 or 50 games and spread the suspension out. So be it if the Astros have to bring up players from the minors.

This has put a dark cloud over the game of professional baseball, and it's going to take MLB to get this situation resolved so we can continue on with the greatest sport, our past time. In the end, with all the cheating and all the money the players make, it still is a kid's game. And nothing in sports beats the sound of the crack of the bat hitting the ball.
